Most people think that they are good if they make it through life not killing anyone. It goes without saying that most people's standards are pretty low when it comes to being good enough to get into heaven. But what is God's standard of good? Are His standards as low as ours, do they change, does God grade on a curve?

Read the following and then take the test and find out...

In Luke, Chapter 18 when the rich young ruler came running up to Jesus and called him “good” Jesus asked him why he called him “good” stating that no one is good except God. He didn't ask this because he thought he wasn't good, he asked this to make the rich young ruler examine his definition of good. Jesus went on to question the rich young ruler asking him if he obeyed the 10 commandments? The rich young ruler said that he had obeyed the 10 commandments from his youth. That alone should give most of us pause since I doubt very much that anyone could obey the 10 commandments for much less than a day let alone for life, which in turn would give evidence for yet another sin against the 10 commandments...Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness. Jesus knew he had not obeyed the 10 commandments and went about questioning him to show him that he had not obeyed them by telling him if he wished to have treasure in heaven that he should sell everything he has and follow Him. At that the rich young ruler went away sorrowful. And that response also showed that the R.Y.R was not being honest when he said that he had obeyed the 10 commandments from his youth because he had disobeyed the very first commandment to Love the Lord Your God with all your heart, with all your mind and with all your soul and to have no other gods before Him. The RYR's other gods were his wealth as he was unwilling to let go of it, therefore putting it before God.

So where do you stand when it comes to the standard that God requires?

Have you EVER told a lie?

Have you EVER stolen something?

Have you EVER taken the Lord's name in vain?

Have you EVER committed adultery? Jesus said that if a person even lusted in his heart after a person that they have committed adultery in their heart.

If so, then you have broken 4 of the 10 Commandments already.

Now some may say, well yes I have done these things but they were in the past. But, my question to you would be if a murderer had committed murder but it was in the past would a righteous and good judge say “Ok, well as long as you don't do it again I'll let you off”? No, he wouldn't and if he did he would not be a good or righteous judge because he would not be upholding the law.

Moreover, I would wager that even if God was to magically erase all your sins of the past you would not be able to go for even one week without committing more sins.

So, if God were to judge you by the 10 commandments would you be guilty or innocent? Sad to say I think we all would be guilty. And if you are guilty where will you be spending eternity? Will murderers, liars, adulterers and blasphemers be in heaven? The Bible says they will not be there. 1 Corinthians Chapter 6 verse 9 says:

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be decieved: neither the sexually immoral, not idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you, but you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God!

Buddah didn't take our penalty for sin upon himself, nor did Mohammad or Krishna or Confuscious, no the only person who took upon himself the penalty for our sins was Jesus Christ. The Bible says that there is no other name given by which man can be saved.

So...are you good enough to get into heaven or will you be paying for your sins yourself for all of eternity?

Contrary to what some believe there are only two places to spend eternity either in heaven or in hell.

So what is a person to do? We are all guilty of sinning against a perfect and holy God. Thankfully, God has provided a way to fulfill the law and still allow sinners and lawbreakers into heaven.

John 3:16 says: For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son, so that whoever might believe in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

So, wont you pray right now for Jesus to forgive your sins and save you from your future sins by placing your faith in him and in HIM alone?

Brie, thank you! This hub is so important.

Even Gautama Siddhartha Buddha recognized that one greater than himself was to come in the west -- someone with red hair, I believe. And I've known many Jews with red or auburn hair. Could he have been referring to Yehoshua of Nazareth?

Could it be that ego is the source of all evil? With ego, there is a sense of entitlement -- I want it, I'll take it. This started in the Garden of Heaven and it continues up unto this day.

When Yehoshua said that we should turn the other cheek, was he referring to the antidote for ego, humility? When he said that we should give up our lives so that we can gain everlasting life, was he saying that we should give up ego? Could ego be the "master" of this world -- the seducer who tempts so many away from the true master in Heaven?

So many Christians think they understand what the Nazarene teacher was saying. Perhaps they do. But there are so many conflicting views. Could everyone be wrong? Could humility cure this?

What was it about the Pharisees that Yehoshua despised? Could it have been ego -- the need to be seen as right? How many Christians act this way -- becoming modern Pharisees?

The Ten Commandments are too easily broken. As with your example, there is too little understanding of their real meaning. Ego helps us delude ourselves into thinking we are good and righteous. Humility is the antidote.

And what does "believe in him" mean? How many actually get it right? How important is humility in ensuring that we don't let this opportunity slip by us? Could ego be the dirty rags some wear when trying to crash the "wedding feast of Heaven?" Could humility be the fine raiment?

Lonestar: Thanks for commenting but I think you are reading way too much into the scriptures. The scriptures are simple and profound at the same time. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth and that no one can know God except through the Son. Also that the natural man cannot understand the things of God for they are spiritually discerned. Moreover, I don't think that the desire to be right or to know truth is a bad thing. I think that the Pharisees were jealous of Jesus and convicted by him.

lone77star profile image

lone77star Level 6 Commenter 12 months ago

Thanks, Brie. Perhaps I am. Only God knows.

Truth is vital, I agree, for only through it can we be free. And the Son is truth and the light. Being right for one's own sake is less than unimportant. Could those who think they are right be claiming to be "first?" And what did Yehoshua say about those who will be first in Heaven, and those who will be last?

Could it be, instead, that both of us are not reading enough into the Bible?

So far, I have only scratched the surface, and I've been at it for 58 years in this blessed human life. And yet I have found a timeline in Genesis compatible with those of science. With it, the reason for the Great Flood is revealed -- the culprit has been found.

I have found the Kabbalah's "Tree of Life" embedded in two chapters of Genesis, and have found an explanation for the seemingly outrageous longevity of the early patriarchs.

Even Yehoshua said that there were things he could not yet teach his disciples. There are many more things to be revealed, but it takes a hunger and humility to find them.

Stopping on the path and thinking that you know it all only defeats the purpose of Noah's Flood and Christ's sacrifice.

Truth is simple, yes. But the path to it is not easy.

Very thought provoking Brie. Having never been to heaven it remains a question of my entrance. We're all sinners whether one wants to make that admission or not. But if Jesus died for our sins, which he did, then the gate should be open for us sinners.

You see, my God, is a loving, giving God who allows for our mistakes in life. He is a forgiver and not one of vengeance. That's the way I see my Creator and he and I have our own personal relationship. It's a bit private and I don't share it with many, if any.

Great Hub!

I agree that it is simple and difficult. The simple is simply accepting what Jesus did for us on the cross. Difficult is always living in such a way that others can see Jesus in us.

Brie Hoffman profile image

Brie Hoffman Hub Author 11 months ago

Lonestar: The Bible says that anyone who adds to it...let him be accursed.

The Frog Prince: To make God in your own image is called Idolatry. God does not forgive those who do not come to him in repentance through Jesus Christ. Jesus said I am the way, the truth and the life, NO ONE comes to the Father but by ME!

Hendrika: All things are possible to those that believe. God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins if we come to him and repent.

Debbie @ Happy  11 months ago

It is very simple and people try to make it hard. We are all sinners and when we ask for forgiveness of those sins they are forgiven. To get to heaven is only believing the Jesus died for our sins. It is very simple and people make it hard. works do not get you to heaven.

Brie, I love you! Not as I love my wife, but as God loves all His children. As children of God, we are siblings. I care deeply about all of my sisters and brothers.

Everyone who reads the Bible, interprets the Bible. In that interpretation, are you adding anything? Is your interpretation equal to or superior to that of God? If it is less than that of God, then there is more to learn. That's why I keep working at it -- trying to remove the veneer of mortal interpretation.

What is evil? Is it evil to be searching for truth as I continue to do, or is it evil to pretend that you've already found it all? Yehoshua told his followers, "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now" (John 16:12 KJV). What were those things? Are you saying you know everything there is to know about salvation? I certainly don't. My Southern Baptist minister grandfather certainly didn't. And my non-denominational pastor father didn't, either.

Is clinging to your own ideas of salvation really "accepting Christ," or is it a deception to cover clinging to ego's own comfort zone? You can follow ego, and say you're following Christ, but what is the greater evil? Is it giving my own discoveries in the love of sharing scraps of wisdom found (even if only partial truths), or is it the pretense of knowing it all with a shallow, perhaps even literal interpretation? Saying that one accepts Christ and doing it are two completely different things. I would wager that very few of the 2+ billion Christians on this planet understand that difference in its entirety.

Try this: In the privacy of your own bath tub, walk on water. This is only between you and God. You need not tell anyone, especially me, the results. This may not prove your faith is pure, but certainly it would show whether or not your faith is strong.

If I have done similar miracles and know that my knowledge is lacking, how can you tell me what my knowledge is all about? Who are you to judge? Just a question. Please reflect on that.

God loves dearly all His children. The way is narrow because we have gotten ourselves into a deep well of our own construction. Our own egos are the devil in disguise. Could that be why our Master instructed us that we should not let the left hand know what the right hand does? The desire to be right is strong and remains a sly seducer, because we think it is our own selves. And that is truly the self we need to let die before we can gain everlasting life.

Stop wearing the dirty rags of this world. You have found the path, but refuse to travel it. That truly is evil. I say that out of love, Brie. I dearly want to make it for myself, but it grieves me to see others not make it when they are so close.

Brie Hoffman profile image

Brie Hoffman Hub Author 11 months ago

God has given us all we need for Salvation in his Son, you should grieve for yourself as I perceive that you do not KNOW his Son.

Not all people are children of God, most are children of Satan..only those who know the Son of God are children of God. The Bible gives me the authority to judge. It says clearly he who has the Son has eternal life he who does not have the Son is judged already.

There is no God as despicted in the bibles, and Heaven and Hell don't exist.

The world and the universe are imperfect and so must its creation from whatever source.

Man has always been evil and Jesus whether he was the Son of God or just a mere human did nothing to change that.

Nothing divine has appeared since the alleged contacts with God in the Old Testament, another story book written by humans.

Compared to what many humans go through in their lives, the story of Jesus is nothing. If that is all they would have to endure on earth, they would trade it in an instance.

What would you even do for eternity if it was available to you?

BTW are humans like the sale bin at Walmart that only a few can be on the full price shelves?

You have no idea what exists after you die, yet you are willing to sacrifice what you know you have today.

Your bibles don't have the answers.

Does the sun revolve around the earth?

How many angels are there exactly?

What happened before the earth existed?

Brie Hoffman profile image

Brie Hoffman Hub Author 11 months ago

The very first thing you said is illogical. There is no such thing as imperfect if there is no God. You rail against what you do not understand and the Bible has said that the FOOL declares there is no God!

Well, it has always been my fervent hope that when I die, I will really find out the truth about existence and the meaning of life...but now I'm not so sure that will happen. Quite a mystery we have here on this planet in space, with evil getting its way sometimes. In fact, I think we have heaven and hell right here on earth. Nonetheless, I think it's our job to create the best life we can, help other people, and make a positive difference in the world. I don't think you have to believe a particular dogma to do that. I may not believe what you believe, but I will stand with you on the side of love.

P.S. I voted yes to both surveys...good enough to get into heaven. And I'm sure I've broken quite a few commandments.

Wow! Lots of disinformation and misinformation floating around here Brie.

Very nice Hub by the way. But why don't you carry it on our instead of leaving off in middle or at least somewhere in between. You have so much right, not all.

Where is the baptism for sins and by whom is it to be accomplished? Where are the works and the faith? Where is the taking care of the poor, the widows and orphans? (Again, works.)

Not all who say Lord Lord will enter into the kingdom of heaven. What manner of men out ye be? The same as the Father. Even perfect.

Obviously we all sin and sin yet again. But if we do the repenting part, confessing and forsaking and obedient in all things and enduring to the end then you may find yourself numbered amongst the righteous and pure in heart and inherit a portion of the Kingdom.

By the way, there is more than just heaven and hell as you spoke of. I believe it says something about many heavens and kingdoms. Describing them as like unto the sun and the stars and there are three kingdoms so one must be like unto the moon.

Sure these are prepared for folks of varying degrees of righteousness and Hell is reserved for a special lot of folks.

It obviously takes more than just believing. It also takes a doing, a becoming. Even the devils in Hell believe the things you said. And ye they area never going to heaven as you describe it.

Which of those 3 degrees do want to own? and what are the qualifications of each? As their glories seem to diminish from the greater to the lesser stars.

Pride is an issue for sure and we all suffer from it in on degree or another. It is not until we become like little children of which the Kingdom of Heaven is made of.

Obedience seems to be big stumbling block for most every soul who ever walked this earth. It is not until we become like Christ in every way we can actually lay claim to the Kingdom. That does not mean to be perfect, but it does mean to be as perfect as you can be. and you can be perfect in some things.

Good question Brie,

I happen to think and it is just a thought not a fact.

That no human being alive would have answers of this nature, simply because we are so flawed and irrational, these are spiritual matters that aren't ment for humans to understand. The word faith comes to mind and blind also. Thank You

Brie Hoffman profile image

Brie Hoffman Hub Author 9 months ago

God has given us a brain and a mind to reason, He expects us to use it. It is not blind faith as that implies that there is no evidence for God when you and I and all of creation is evidence for a Creator. It's a basic rational conclusion.

bolt1951 9 months ago

I agree however, it is quite difficult to un brain wash ourselves from so many years of mind games and untruthfullness coming from everywhere, religion and government, the more you look the more you mistrust every thing in your path.I look at the world as such,I do not practice religion however I was taught one thing that if it doesn't feel right and perfectly clear it is not of a Godly nature, therefore avoid it and move on and attempt to help those that have had less of an oppurtunity than I to be able to see at least that much.

Brie Hoffman profile image

Brie Hoffman Hub Author 9 months ago

It's true there is a lot of deception out there these days. The Bible, however, predicted this so that we wouldn't be deceived by it.

(2Ti 3:13) But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

(2Ti 3:14) But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

(2Ti 3:15) And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
