How to Make People Happy

Happiness is a universal goal. We all want to be happy and usually surround ourselves with people who do make us happy, or at least we try. There are several things you can do to make others happy. I have narrowed it down to 4 areas:

  • Listen
  • Be Entertaining
  • Appreciation
  • Acceptance

Listening to people makes them feel important. When you listen to them you are subconsciously telling them that what they have to say makes a difference. It also fosters a sense of intimacy because you get to know them better and if you are good at communicating with another person that intimacy will grow. This is an area that is one of the main complaints of married couples, that one or the other person does not listen. By not listening to someone you are, in fact, telling then that they are not important and that you will not waste your time communicating with them. It's a subtle form of disrespect. No relationship can survive this for very long, so if you want to make someone happy listen to them when they are talking. Make sure to actively participate by asking questions and if you truly value the person you are talking to you will want to know what is going on in their lives anyway.

Everyone wants to feel special and needed, everyone! If you want to make people happy seek out the special qualities, talents and traits that make your friends who they are. Ask them for advice, comment on their special abilities and never take them for granted. These are the areas that make us who we are and by appreciating them in your mates you will help them to further develop these areas. If you want to make people happy you have to help them be the best they can be and this is done through appreciation.

Next, BE ENTERTAINING. Yes, you need to provide pleasure to the people you want to make happy. Pleasure can be in the form of laughter or communication or just by being an interesting person. We all have boring, humdrum lives at times. When you have someone in your life that is uplifting and interesting it makes life a little sweeter. I'm sure we've all had friends that when you talk to them they crack you up, these friends are truly precious, they are the kind of people you want to have in your lives forever because it makes life fun and colorful. This is not to say that you have to be fake or that sometimes you can't be down but even in the dark periods if you can connect with someone through laughter it makes it a little more palatable.

Finally, acceptance is crucial. None of us are perfect, we all have our faults and just as we would want others to accept us through the good, the bad and the ugly we need to accept others even when they are not acting in ways we would like. Unconditional love is a great gift. If you want to truly make others happy give that gift. It's not as easy as it might sound and you might not choose to give that gift to everyone you know but the people that you do give it to will be happier for it and so will you.

Making other people happy is one of the greatest gifts one can bestow. I don't know about you but the people who can make me laugh and in their presence is joy are some of my most treasured friends. It is a priceless quality in these days of difficulty, bad news and gloom. If you can hone these skills for yourself you will never be without a friend and that, my dear, is the greatest thing of all!

Do you try to make others happy?
