I Want a cute Adult Trike or Tricycle!

Ok, I'm 49 years old and I want a tricycle. I know it may sound dorky but there is something about those trikes that just strike my fancy. Maybe I'm starting my second childhood earlier than most but I've been yearning for one of those contraptions for awhile now. I think they are geeky cool if you know what I mean.

Besides that, I am short. How short? Very short. Let's just say that one of my main purposes in life is to make normal short people feel tall. So, being a vertically challenged person I find riding a regular bike intimidating. Whenever I get on one my heart starts racing and I'm scared to death I'll not be able to gracefully slow the bike down or get off of it. It's way too much stress at my delicate pre-50 age! Oh and several of the trikes have normal seats (read wide bottomed seats), not those wretched bike seats that normal bikes have that I'm convinced might be the cause of hemorrhoids or something equally as dire, some trikes have chair seats and they look super comfortable.

Moreover, I like the idea of riding a trike. I don't own a car, nor do I ever want to own a car again. When I arrived in Manhattan I gleefully sold my car and never looked back. I can't say I've ever missed owning a car since. I don't miss having to clean it, maintain it (although I never did) or having to pay payments and insurance on it. And I sure don't miss worrying that it will break down in the middle of nowhere while I have to fight off serial killers who try and take advantage (ok maybe I've watched one too many horror flicks). But, uno no one gets killed while riding a trike, nope, not a one! Nope, don't miss it and don't want another one ever.

So, my thoughts meandered wildly to what alternative methods I could use to move my person from one place to the next. I currently use public transportation and I'm all for it, but the idea of getting around on my own steam has always been my preferred method. So I started looking into bikes and I stumbled upon the adult trike, joy of joys! I think it's a great idea. I mean, no more fear factor trying to stop my bike gracefully in Manhattan traffic, no more balance issues when having to slow down and there is also a little storage compartment (in the one I want...because I haven't purchased it yes).

Yes, the trike is the perfect pre-senior mode of transportation in my mind. Not only do you save on gas, have storage capacity, increase your activity output but it's cute with just a touch of eccentricity thrown in for good measure!

I love the bike...would definitely ride one...but actually my daughter did see someone killed right in front of her...on a bike...in Manhattan last year. It devastated her for a while.

But she rides her bike all over Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Good one! Might be a good alternative if you don't have to travel too far. the little basket might come i handy too.

I have a workman tricycle that I briefly used in a large industrial setting. They are not particularly stable when making sharp turns or over curbs. And I still love my pickup truck, van, and assorted vehicles. I enjoy bike riding and am currently working on one that can be ridden on water. No traffic, beautiful environment, fun.

Take care,

That is completely awesome! I would SO get one of those if we didn't live several miles out of town!

Don't bother with those heavy, klunky work bikes. Try a recumbent trike. They're light and fun, which means you'll actually use them and still can carry a decent load.

A representative example might be the Terratrikes (terratrike.com) made in Michigan.

I don't like the way they recline; the terratrikes look uncomfortable.

I can verify the comfort of a three-wheeler.. my husband and I, and our dog, rode trikes from coast to coast last year. 4500 miles in 6 months. Check out our blog, if you like. We rode for a cause, too...
