I don't know exactly when men stopped wearing attractive hats and started wearing baseball caps but whoever thought of the idea should be drawn and quartered. I say this because I think the hats of yore were quite distinguished and I wish men still wore them. As a matter of fact, I think that the whole world of fashion in it's entirety has declined exponentially about 100 years ago. No longer do you see feminine clothes and masculine top hat and tales, no more are the beautiful petticoats of old, the opera gloves, the top hats or the corsets worn underneath. Now, we are stuck with jeans, tennis shoes, t-shirts and baseball caps! If fashion isn't the bell-weather for the disintegration of the human race I don't know what is!
I think the entire world has entered an
ugly stage. It seems that when we did away with chivalry and
embraced equality we also did away with the beautiful ornaments that
distinguished men from women. Men and women used to revel in their
unique god-given attributes. Men in top hats and tales, women gloried
in their beauty adorned with long swishing dresses, lace, satin
corsets and gloves. I can't help but wonder whether fashion, like T.V.,
precedes culture or mirrors it, maybe it's a little of both. I for
one miss the beauty of feminine clothes and the suave and dashing
elegance in men's clothes and would like to see a comeback. Does fashion affect behavior? You tell me. Howe do you feel when you are dressed to the nines as compared to oh...say..sweat clothes? Would an army march with as much pride in rags as they do in uniforms? Would a bride feel as glorious on her wedding day in jeans as in a beautiful white dress? I think the answer is obvious.
While I'm not suggesting that we all return to the Gibson Girl days, I am proposing that we all could add a little romance, a little beauty, a little flare to our otherwise mundane lives. It's something we can do, it's something we have control over. After all when you consider the degenerate state of our world...a little beauty and style in the form of a feminine corset, a handsome top hat or a lacy pair of woman's gloves could be just the thing to lift us up out of the trenches of our everyday routines.
Unfortunately the younger generation have no recollection of what used to be and they are the poorer for it. Many members of this generation, the MTV generation, have sunk to new fashion lows and our culture seems hell-bent on stamping out any vestige of the beautiful, the romantic, the feminine or the masculine. Maybe if we all started wearing corsets, top hats and gloves again we could scratch and claw our way back from the ordinary, back from the profane mundane and return again to the romantic days of old. It has to start somewhere, why not with a piece of clothing?

I watch a lot of TCM movies and I have to say, things were so much better (fashionably speaking) about 80 years ago.
Well, the east coast has always been more formal than the west coast. Even back in the 70's you could tell which airport you were in by the way people dressed. That does not mean that people in the west don't dress up, but it is just for special occasions, not as the uniform of choice.
Brie,
Today's kids are concerned about their pants half way to the ground and their butt hanging out for the world to see. Unless of course they think they are some kind of vampire or undead grave crawler. Dead and Vampire kids actuallymix up the death look with some fashion, but I am not sure that is a positive.
I can't wait to see you on your homestead, plowing the garden in a corset, dressed up like Scarlet O'Hara. Yea baybee! Now you're talkin!

Yea baby! Now you're talkin!
LOL! I shall never go hungry again!!!! Don't put it past me!
Great Hub! "Add a little beauty and romance and flare..."
Yes, and how about a little mystery? A little intrigue?
And should I mention manners and respect...we have lost so much.
We have and it makes all those things ever the more dear, thanks for writing.
Good hub,thanks for sharing.
I agree. It has gotten even worse with the almost complete disappearance of pantyhose / women's hosiery from fashion runways, ads, and Hollywood premieres.
You just have to find the right events to see corsets, men's hats and other fabulous retro items. Burlesque shows, Buring Man, Anon salon, Steampunk events, etc.
I agree that feminism has had a cost. With the effort of elevating a woman to her rightful place by a man's side, I believe the exact place got skewed. Now a man does not know where he is in the scheme of things, a woman is bombarded as to what her role is, the society at large is non-distinguishable one from another. This blurring makes sinning easier, I think and correct actions less clear. They could bring back the clothes of old but the damage done will not let the "old days return"
True but I still like the old clothes :)
Iam with you on this one - wished I lived on tophat wearing times. I do like beautifully cut suits and a nice hat. While I can see how corsets can be constricting, they did look so sexy! Good call, Brie! Voted up.
Thanks Docmo and thanks for becoming a fan!

I agree! Let's bring back romance. Can baggy jeans and sneakers get any uglier?
