When they don't do a damn thing! Not only are they ineffective, some studies have said that 90% pass right through the body, but they are also expensive, unnecessary and may even cause damage over the long run.
Synthetic vitamins (the kind you are probably taking because they are cheaper) have added ingredients. These ingredients can be wax, sugars, coal tars (yum), preservatives and starch to name a few.
Not only are these vitamins expensive but they are completely unnecessary. Just think about this for a moment...go and get one of your “One A Day” vitamins or one of your multi-vitamins and look at it. Look at how small they are. What do you think is in that pill? How is it made? Where does it come from? That's the problem in this country, we watch a commercial on TV and automatically believe everything it tells us like lapdogs. Doesn't common sense tell you that you could just as easily get those vitamins from food that comes out of God's green earth more efficiently than swallowing a man-made chemically manipulated over-priced pill?
Synthetic vitamins are super processed, they are the laboratory simulation of the real thing. That alone should send red warning flags up. Why would you pay money for a laboratory simulation of something that you can either grow in your own dirt or buy from the store and eat. You are being conned!
Not only are vitamins a waste of money but there is some evidence that taking vitamins over a long period of time is actually bad for you. Dr. Zoltan P. Rona, M.D., says that while a healthy person will not drop dead immediately after ingesting synthetic supplements, “the long-term consequences of continuous, daily intakes are potentially dangerous.” Reactions include fatigue, memory loss, depression, insomnia and potential liver disorders.
We have to start thinking for ourselves in this country, we have to turn off the TV and get back to nature. We are dying from the pre-packaged food, synthetically made vitamins and the overall crap that we are spoon-fed on a daily basis...whether that is information via the television set or hydrogenated fructose corn syrup otherwise known as COKE or synthetic vitamins. Maybe when the time comes that most of our population is too poor to afford this crap we will start to wise up. Hopefully for the rest of you, you will educate yourselves sooner rather than later and will just say NO to GMO's, NO to Synthetic Crap, NO to Frankenfoods and YES to wholesome food read food, remember that?
If you really want to improve your health and get more vitamins you should buy a vita-mix blender and a juicer. The best way to get more vitamins in concentrated form is juicing. Also, by taking liquid nourishment you enable your body to appropriate the vitamins quickly and in living, concentrated form. So wise up, starting drinking your vitamins and you will see a real difference!

Brie thankyou for pointing this out. I have a friend who tries to push vitamins and various supliments on me claiming that they do this and that. For 63 years I've gotten all the necessary whatevers from the food I eat. My body says you need this or that so I eat something a fruit or a veggie, or something, and I have what I need.
Hmmmm.... I agree with 90% of these thoughts. However, I do take vitamin D on my doctor's recommendation. I was deficient, and it is often difficult to be outside at the right time to get enough from the sun, especially during the winter months. Eons ago, people worked outside more, never used sunscreen, and didn't have the problem with getting Vit D from the sun's rays. I suppose you could get a mega-dose from cod liver oil, but yechhh!
Also I find calcium is quite difficult to get at the recommended levels from dietary sources, especially if you're not comfortable consuming lots of dairy products. So I doubt I'm even getting enough of the calcium, but I just don't bother anyway, as I don't want to take calcium supplements.
My vitamins are liquid. I was told I need them. But something inside of me fights it.
Agreed, I hate the though of taking medicine, because "they" are going to come back in 10 years and pull brand xyz or brand lmn off the shelves because it has been shown to___________. My poor daughter was battling cancer, and the doc put her on Vioxx for months. Then look waht happened.

I had a lot of blood drawn at the VA hospital and they put me on mega dose of vitamin D for just one round, I think it was like 2800 units per liquid dose for 1 week. Then along with it a calcium boost of either citrate or carbonate and I think it was citrate for it's better absorption, as another liquid for just a short while. Then they gave me fish oil in jell-caps, of 6000 units per day and gave it month after month, it turned out that after having a seizure that sent me into the emergency room and a neurologist ordered a brain scan and the small capillaries showed up as inflamed and some bursting in my brain stem, according to the neurologist, was a direct result of too much of the "omega 3" from the supplement. Basically an over dose, causing the seizure, told me to drop the supplement all together and just eat grilled or baked Salmon instead of dosing with the gel caps. It was stepping back to how God intended over mega dosing that ultimately caused the seizure and neuro problems. He told me that it could do more damage than good in some cases. So I got a wake up call versus a seizure while driving, just a good case of more is not always better as the makers of these supplements call for. God designed things as we should receive them, Amen!

Very true, taking synthetic source vitamins is waste of money and you might be putting your life at risk. Every year so many people die taking these supplements but they are not retorted because nobody monitors.
Instead eat all the veggies, fruits and exercise regularly. I believe you will never need synthetic vitamins again.

I have heard that about vitamins. My sister uses these Usana vitamins that are specifically made for greater absorption into the body.

Ahhh Brie Brie.You hit everything on the nail.I preach that to my mother and father,but they hard headed and stuck in their ways about foods,multi-vitamins ,ect,and as for my mother,she wonder why she became a diabetic..hmmm.....I was taking "Garden of Life" vitamins but i need more info on them.It was ok,but you still wonder..But nothing like getting what you need from foods tho..
Great hub! I have never taken vitamins as I feel that I eat properly and after reading your hub will just continue on with the way I have always gone.
I have always eaten well but after a leg accident which shattered the tibia and broke my kneecap in three places I wound up with quite a bit of nerve and bone damage. This eventually caused a great deal of pain and I was referred to a rheumatologist who had a blood test done. I was severely lacking in vitamin D3. I was put on a high dose for 6 months and now maintain a dose of 2000 ul a day. The pain is long gone, the muscle spasms also. I have more energy and have halted the pre-osteoporosis. Everyone is different but I definitely benefited. This is the only vitamin pill I take... the rest of what I need comes my good diet of lots of vegs, fruits and occasional poultry and meat.
This has worked wonders for me so I don't feel the need to change it. Can't do much sun and see no reason to since one pill a day works. I get plenty of the other needed vitamins from my daily foods...everyone is different and what works for one may not work for another.
The irony is processing foods removes many of the vitamins and minerals that companies then turn around to try to sell to us since we're all of a sudden deficient in!
I completely agree with this hub. If you pay attention to what you are eating you are going to be getting everything you need. It's also a heck of a lot better to get your vitamins from a natural source.

hi Brie, thanks for the information- I have always thought that if you eat correctly, veggies,fruit, chicken, and carbohydrates then you don't need any extra help, but I do think the elderly can gain some advantage from taking them.
