(Matthew 6:19 - 21) Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

I want to address a recent trend in our churches towards manufacturing happiness and pursuing riches. For some reason we have been taught (especially as Christians) that to feel unhappy, negative, sorrowful or mournful is to be Unchristian. Some people will even lie to their friends so that they don't reveal to them the troubles they are having because they are afraid to appear unspiritual. Moreover, many Christians think that success, riches and having “the good life” means that God is with you. Many popular preachers preach and secular role models teach that you should “Be all you can be”, “Become a Better You”, have your “Your Best Life Now”, or learn “The Secret” but, is this scriptural?

What is the truth and more what does the Bible say?

(Matthew 5:4) Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

(Ecclesiastes 7:3) Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

(Luke 6:24) But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

Furthermore, the Bible teaches us that the truly great pillars of the faith suffered greatly in this life as described below:

(Hebrews 11:24-40) By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:

Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

Should we seek after riches?

(Proverbs 23:4 & 5) Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

(Proverbs 30:8 & 9) Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

(Matthew 19:16 - 24) And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

(Mark 12:41-44) And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

(James 2:5-7) Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

(Luke 1:52 & 53) He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

Should we seek OUR BEST LIFE NOW?

(Luke 6:20-26) And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

(Luke 16:19- 25) There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried. And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

Do you think that some of these people may have had negative thoughts?

(2 Corinthians 6:4-10) But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses. In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed. As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

And finally, what does God think of those who teach that GAIN IS GODLINESS?

(1 Timothy 6:5-10) Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Jesus told us to take up our cross, DENY ourselves and follow him. Jesus was poor, homeless, single and His whole mission was to further the Kingdom of God. If a teacher is not teaching what Jesus taught then let him be ACCURSED! It's hard enough to pick up our crosses without having these apostate teachers spreading their false doctrine!

(Revelation 3:14 - 17)  And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;  I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.  So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.  Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

Hi Brie.

It caught my attention about Joel Osteen. It is very sad talking about it. I know Joel's heart. The worse thing is when man get interviewed by secular media. They twist everything they could and it is their intention. I seen particular Larrys' K. interview. But man often cannot understand it. One can dissect anything the way he wants.

Once Billy Graham was interviewed by Larry K. also and B.Graham said the same, "there are many ways go to heaven". I could not believe it, but I have to finally say that it could be, I took it out of context. I do not have right to judge Billy Graham either.

When Jesus was negative it was because He ministered to negative people under the Law. It is true that we should not judge anyone no matter what. There are many people who in deadbed receive Jesus and nobody knows it except Lord.

I have to remember that Satan is accusing our brethren day and night.

Jesus told us we shall know them by their fruit Vladimir. I think that 1st Timothy makes it very clear what we should do with preachers like Joel Olsteen.

Do you know that Jesus was not poor? The poverty is curse. Deuteronomy 28:15-68. Also loving money is curse. Many love money and it is curse also. But having money is blessing.

I do not like poverty Gospel the same as you hate prosperity Gospel. Poverty gospel is not gospel at all. It is bad news. I was three time poor and not wanna to go the same route. But everybody has freedom to be poor, communists will do it on us. Because what man believe he has. But I do not have time to chew on negatives.

The Bible says that he was poor Vladimir:

(2 Corinthians 8:9) For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

I'm sorry Vladimir but you are preaching a different gospel and I cannot allow that on my hub. Jesus never preached the prosperity gospel and there are so many verses in the Bible that say that that I could not fit them all in the article. Jesus said to DENY YOURSELF, PICK UP YOUR CROSS AND FOLLOW HIM. Not, to go after money!

Brie, I am sorry it is wrong. Jesus became poor on the cross. He did not have even close. Become poor and being poor are two different matters. Jesus was the Carpenter, very profitable profession in His time. He also received after birth king's kind of chunk of gold. Do you think the kings messengers would came to new King of Israel with two pennies? Would it not be the shame?

Paul teaches us that love of money is root of evil not having the money.

Vladimir: I never said having money was in and of itself wrong. But, you keep showing me things through mans wisdom, no where in the Bible does it say that we should pursue wealth. Contrary to that, it does say in many many verses (some of which I mention above) that riches are a snare, that it is more difficult for a rich man to go to heaven and that Jesus tells us to sell everything and follow him...among a few.

I believe you are in GRAVE ERROR over this and should repent. I say this with sorrow because I thought that you were a strong Christian and now I am wondering about that.

Brie i do also believe as you do, that we are not to pursue wealth as in doing so, we are attempting to, whether conciously or unconciously raise our status. This then can become as an ego thing. I know that there are those Preachers out there who make much money and who do use it to travel the world and preach the Gospel which they could not do if they were poor. As it is impossible to walk around to every nation.

However i do not believe that living a very extravagant life style with mansions and earthly possessions is what the Lord would have them do, while there are millions of starving and homeless people out there. Jesus commanded his disciples to take nothing, not even a change of clothes when they were sent out to preach. Yet He knew that God would provide ALL they needed.

Great hub sister and one to think about. Thanks for sharing.

God Bless

Thanks "Loves to Read", it's hard for me to even understand the logic behind the Prosperity doctrine when it is so blatantly unbiblical.

Brie: Your opening paragraph sums up well what needs to be taught again and again. All that we have posession wise here on earth, is worth nothing. Our spirit now while on earth, and later when we return to heaven will have no need or use for the material stuff we cling to and work for today.

Mammon v God

Its a touchy subject, but in reality, God our Father, is at the end of the day our supplier. Once you are walking in the Spirit, and living by faith, you soon find that our Father does prosper you, and also cause you to create wealth. God does say, that, we as his children are more important than sparrows, and he will not allow his children to beg for bread.Yet we should not be tied up in trusting the riches of this world, but diligently seek the kingdom all the time.

Mat 6:32 For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Mat 6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day [is] the evil thereof.

The key is Seek ye first the Kingdom of God.

Go well

I agree, there is a big difference between seeking wealth and being wealthy. However, those that spend their wealth on themselves are greatly deceived and deceiving others. Our wealth is to be used for the kingdom, not for million dollar mansions!

WOW!!!! Bless you dear sweet sister! Thank you for not fearing what man can say or do and proclaiming truth BOLDLY! When I think of you in the future, I will remember this hub and my thoughts will be that of endearment and from a kindred spirit. This is the truth of the Gospel.

I used to attend a church that taught a prosperity gospel. There was no talk of hell or repentance or the call to be separated from the things of this world. I knew that what was being preached was not the most important truths contained in the gospel message. It was the tickling of itching ears. I knew I had to get out of there and did. Holiness, righteousness, repentence, death to self... this is where life is found.

It seems to me that the underlying message in all of these - between "poverty" and "wealth" - is really the message about living a good life.

Whether you are rich or poor, I don't think that actually matters. What matters is HOW you live - if you are a good person, if you are kind to others, if you treat others the way you would like to be treated, if you love others, forgive others, etc.

If you are poor but you are not living with love and kindness, you are not living a GOOD life.

If you are rich but you are not living with love and kindness, you are not living a GOOD life.

I don't believe that physical wealth means anything in the eyes of God - what matters is HOW you live. And if you pursue material wealth, you are pursuing the wrong things. It doesn't mean that having wealth, or working and becoming wealthy is wrong - what is wrong is the celebration of wealth itself as something in itself.

I agree to a point but even Jesus said that it is easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich person to go to heaven.

I saw Joel Olsteen on Oprah Winfrey some years past and he seemed to be very general and accepting, just the way Oprah loves. I had wished he would say something that gave some hint of the teachings he espouses. What good is being a preacher that doesn't preach? Preaching is not just speaking to people about general things about God. Preaching is telling the lost how to get saved. He must know the truth to at least respond as he did in the video but has other motivations to preach. People all flock to him because he is not being used to convict their hearts. I will let God judge his salvation, but we can see the evidence of his ministry. "If you were of the world, the world would love its own." It is very evident to me the world loves him. He can't be using the word as a sword to cut because the word convicts and offends. He is afraid of offending, whether because of money or because of fear, I don't know. It is very lucrative apparently.
